Philosophy of Education

I believe that teachers should take a humanistic approach to education in order to be effective in the classroom.  Humanist educators consider learning from the perspective of the human potential for growth, meaning that students are encouraged to focus on becoming the best one can be.  I think people possess unlimited potential for growth and development, and it’s a teacher’s duty to help each student on their individual journey.

Every student has the potential to forge their own path and define “success” in their own way, but it’s a teacher’s job to motivate and help them reach their goals. For this reason, each student’s curriculum should somewhat be designed for the individual student. The student must have the freedom to choose what interests them and what best fits their personal goals and needs. In order for this teaching style to be successful the teacher must create a nourishing, and encouraging environment. Interaction with others is also a key component in a successful educational experience.

Teaching is like growing a garden. There are many different types of plants in the garden, and these different plants all need different care, such as amount of water and sunlight. Each plant also grows at different rates, but it’s the gardener’s job to nurture each individual plant to grow into what it’s meant to be. Like the gardener, a teacher must encourage each individual student to find their own destiny and fulfill their potential.
